What are the stages of membership in Beta?
Membership is only available through he undergraduate chapters. It is offered to candidates selected and approved by the members of the chapter. Actual membership is by formal initiation, but this depends on the candidate’s acceptance of the offer of membership and his completion of certain requirements. The time from his acceptance until actual initiation is know as “pledging”; during this time the candidate is called a “pledge.” After a certain minimum period of learning, and a test of fraternity knowledge, the pledge is formally initiated into the membership by means of the secret ritual. This requires a promise of secrecy, after which all the main secrets are revealed, and the initiate signs the official roll. He is assigned a sequential “roll number,” which ranks him in the total number of members of his chapter.
Membership in the fraternity continues throughout life, unless the individual resigns or is expelled. Members of Beta Theta Pi are divided into undergraduates and alumni, depending on whether or not the member has graduated. Undergraduates are sometimes referred to as “actives.” although this is a misnomer, and implies that alumni have only a passive role in the fraternity. The only practical difference between the undergraduate and alumni brothers is related to voting and representation.
